What should you do if your cat accidentally ingests a poisonous succulent? Its needs are similar to a succulent wreath’s: bright, but not excessive light (rotate sometimes for even exposure), weekly moistening (from the top), pinching back if any cuttings become leggy. Showers are great, but not for succulents. It sounds a little weird, but trust us-it’s super tasty and has health benefits too! Mother Nature can sometimes take over, no matter how much we try to care for our plants. It’s a highly desirable habitat for people as well as plants, and a great place to view large specimens. Succulents get calcium from the oyster shells which help regulate the soil’s pH. Once your plant is established, you won’t see as much soil. So be patient and don’t add soil toppers. It was wonderful to see Jan and Jim again. Jackie Johnson, president and founder of the Peninsula Garden Club made it possible for me to visit their garden and give a presentation about Designing with Succulents. Root rot can also occur with succulents or cacti if they are overwatered. If that seems far-reaching, then you might consider well water. Also noteworthy in the garden are dry creek beds that double as pathways. Rainwater is funneled into the garden by a dry creek bed made of river cobbles. Give the soil a thorough stir and let it dry completely between each watering. Before watering again, wait until the soil has dried completely. I give them a good drink and then leave them alone until the next watering. Some species may not flower for more than 20+ years. Others might take many decades to reach full bloom. Although the desert plant is easy to grow, indoors it can be quite challenging. Jim makes it look easy for him to grow tree aloes 20 feet high, epidendrums that are airy, and deuterochonias that are sofa-sized (a colony-forming bromeliad with spiky spines) but he has his own mistakes.
